The Hippos Fight

By | May 22, 2011

Hippos are aggressive animals and this gets even worse if there are babies present. Rival hippo bulls will stand up to each other opening their mouths as wide as possible, which can be up to 150 degrees (called ‘gaping’ or ‘yawning’). A smaller or weaker bull will usually back off which could prevent a full blown fight occurring, so deaths from fighting each other is not common. ┬áIf a fight does occur, the bulls use their lower incisors to slash at each other, bellowing loudly.
