Wildlife art: The Gemsbok

By | March 6, 2012

The Gemsbok (Oryx gazella) is an antelope that lives in arid areas in Southern Africa, mostly in the Kalahari desert. It is around 1.2m tall at shoulder height and an average male gemsbok can weigh between 220-250kgs. The spectacular horns are what makes the gemsbok a popular hunting target – they are around 85cm in length. In males these horns are straight, but in females the ends curve slightly towards the rear as well as being a bit thinner and longer.
